What was the defining moment that you knew you were meant to explore the world?
It was my second trip to Europe - this time it was finally solo. I arrived at my hostel, which was an 8-person dorm in Prague. The next bed over was a Chilean guy who asked me if I wanted to explore the city. I knew at that moment I was meant to do and see more. Since then I have visited him & his wife in Chile, and they came to Mardi Gras this past year. Traveling is a life-long bond!
- Best travel story, go. (Not a question but whatever. We do what we want)
I lived in what some may call "The Real World" type of experience in Boracay, Philippines. After a wholesome 2-week trip with my Uncle I've only known through Facebook/FaceTime (mom's brother) in the small Filipino town of Pampanga my mom grew up in, I shipped off to Boracay, which if you have the chance to go, is an absolute must when visiting the Philippines. I partied. In a party hostel. For 5 straight days. Memorable times and I follow all of those "Real World" friends on Instagram today. It's a misfit crew of 8-10 people from all over the world. I have a keen sense some may find their way to this
blog, and read this and smile haha!!
- What’s your all-time favorite place to visit, and why is it special to you?
The entire country of Thailand is magical. From the north in Chiang Mai to the south in Ko Phi Phi - I experienced amazing food at insane value and tremendously hospitable and caring Thai natives up and down the country. I love Thailand, straight up!
- What’s your least favorite city and why? (Think of a place where you just didn’t feel satisfied after you left, or is completely overrated)
Copenhagen was the most unimpressive to me of all the cool cities I have been to in Europe. I always felt like I was overpaying for below-standard food options. Maybe I didn't explore enough, although Christiania was dope. Google it!
- Was there ever a time you felt unsafe or have gotten into a bad situation? How did it play out?
Happens more than you would prefer it to, but being on your guard becomes instinctive when you know your passport can be potentially stolen at any time in a foreign environment, which is a horrifying thought - but a possibility! Wear a sling bag and carry those valuables on your person! A Modern Drifter fannypack might actually be the best option...
- What’s one item, (other than shoes or clothing), that you absolutely must have on all your travels?
Non-negotiable: Crocs flip-flops, OR some sort of waterproof, shower shoes. Barefoot in a hostel shower is a no-no. A possible unwritten rule? If it isn't let it be known, right now.
- Do you prefer solo or group travel? Why?
Solo. Less logistical constraints, or none rather :) Plan less. Be sporadic more. Don't overcomplicate it and just do it.
- What is the one place you would say everyone should absolutely see at least once in their lifetime? What did you love about it?
Prague. I think going back to question one I knew in that city I was meant to travel. Something about it is so magical and beautiful. I am not an infrastructure snob or follow historic architects, but you will have seen nothing like Prague unless you go visit.
- Have you ever had a life-changing moment or epiphany while traveling?
Flying from Rome to Dubrovnik Croatia was a life-changing experience. My buddy and I were flying budget Ryanair, and we descended 3 times with no landing due to strong winds around the airport. I have never looked out the window on a plane and decided it was my time to die, until this flight. And it happened 3 times because the pilots kept trying to land. After the 4th try, the pilots committed and it was a brutally rough landing. When we landed I told myself I was going to be a better person in life. I proceeded to deboard the plane and continue to be the exact same person, allowing toxic people into my life to continuously take advantage of me. That's a joke. That flight fuckin sucked!
What city/country would you love to see next?
I want to go back to Europe and explore. Portugal sounds like a good start since I have never been. From there, I would plan the rest of my travels.
